Mission

NJ PEEC advocates for the elimination of  the underlying sources of environmental and economic harms in historically exploited and overburdened communities, ensuring access to clean and equitable energy.

Vision

To create an arena to ensure the inclusivity of Black and Brown communities at the inception of policies and proposed energy reforms.

NJPEEC advocates for 100% clean energy transition that keeps energy affordable and accessible for all New Jersey families, while creating good jobs and protecting the health of systematically marginalized and overburdened low income populations and communities of color.

Ways we can work together to achieve this goal:

  1. Prioritize the 100% transition of energy consumption and generation from carbon-emitting sources to carbon-free sources and then to fully renewable, carbon-free sources.

  2. Focus the transition away from fossil fuel electricity generation toward renewable technologies and battery storage, starting with the replacement of the most polluting facilities–such as peaker plants and incinerators–which are almost exclusively located in overburdened black and brown communities.

  3. Increase state funding for and access to energy efficiency for homes and businesses in low income and communities of color. This support will help keep bills manageable, lower emissions in environmental justice communities and provide local jobs completing energy upgrades.

  4. Provide incentives for electrification and remove barriers to access for electrified residential and commercial buildings to meet our emissions targets and protect the health of residents by reducing air pollution.

  5. Increase energy and efficiency related workforce training and apprenticeship opportunities to maximize local job creation and support of local entrepreneurs. Additionally, focus educational pipeline efforts to increase secondary and post-secondary educational exposure to energy sector green jobs through internships, summer programs and structured learning environments.

  6. Electrify school buses, trains and other forms of public transportation, prioritizing transportation that runs in low income and communities of color to improve the air quality and quality of life. Increase state incentives for personal and commercial transition to electric vehicles.

  7. Prioritize community-centered public engagement across all state agencies, making energy and equity-related information, tools and resources accessible and multilingual so that all people, especially those in environmental justice communities, are empowered to implement best practices and change or advocate for the policies that directly affect their lives.
